In 2023, Singapore and Vietnam celebrate 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations and 10 years of our Strategic Partnership (referred to as "50/10"). The twin anniversaries provide an opportunity for the people of Singapore and Vietnam to celebrate the great progress that has been made over the last 50 years, as well as deepen and broaden our bilateral cooperation in new areas for the next 50 years and beyond.
Since the establishment of relations in 1973, Singapore and Vietnam have made tremendous strides in forging a relationship that is multifaceted and underpinned by foundations of strategic trust. The frequent bilateral exchanges and visits by our leaders over the years have served to reaffirm the excellent relations and built up a strong friendship between our two countries. Our bilateral cooperation has continued to grow from strength to strength in many sectors including trade and investment, finance, security and defence, and education. Besides working closely bilaterally, Singapore and Vietnam also work to emphasise the importance of upholding ASEAN Centrality and unity, to strengthen regional economic integration, and uphold an open and inclusive regional architecture.
Both sides continue to explore new and emerging areas to broaden and deepen our bilateral collaboration. In February this year, Singapore and Vietnam signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the Green-Digital Economic Partnership, which will pave the way for us to cooperate more in areas of mutual interest such as the green and digital economies, renewable energy, carbon credits, sustainability and cybersecurity.
Over the course of 2023, Vietnam and Singapore will be organising a range of events to commemorate the 50/10 anniversaries. These events reflect the wide variety of engagements that both countries work together on. In particular, the Singapore Regional Business Forum (SRBF) will highlight the economic pillar of the relationship. Singapore is one of the largest investors in Vietnam, two-way trade has grown steadily over the past decade, and the 14 Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks across Vietnam are icons of the bilateral relationship. The 7th SRBF in Hanoi will be an important milestone that will catalyse the expansion of the economic relationship going forward.
