In July 2001, the Minister for Trade and Industry Singapore introduced a Bill in Parliament to establish the Singapore Business Federation (SBF) Act, which passed by Parliament and became law on 5 October 2001. Under the SBF Act, all Singapore-registered companies with a share capital of $500,000 and above are members of SBF. The Federation was established on 1 April 2002 and was officially launched by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 11 April 2002.
Acting as the apex business chamber with more than 28,000 member companies, including critical local foreign trade associations and business chambers, the SBF champions the interests of the business community in Singapore in trade, investment, and industrial relations. Nationally, SBF acts as the bridge between the government and businesses in Singapore to create a conducive business environment. Internationally, SBF represents the business community in bilateral, regional, and multilateral ways for the purpose of trade expansion and business networking.
